"Taking this restraint... is profoundly effective" explains the fourth line. Because adornment leads to the widespread commission of many offenses, it is separately prohibited and called an occasion of heedlessness (pramāda-sthāna). Excellent conduct means intermediate excellent conduct: covering the entire day, it checks butchering and hunting; covering the entire night, it checks adultery and theft. This explanation is given primarily in terms of the majority; in truth, day and night both are capable of abandoning both. These precepts of a day and night also abandon false speech and so forth, but they are not mentioned either because their fault is light and not discussed, or because they are biased toward the body, or because citing the first indicates the latter.
