"The Dārṣṭāntikas state … there are also two kinds": this explains the fourth line [of the verse]. The Dārṣṭāntikas state that karma has four alternatives: The first alternative is that there is karma whose time is determined but whose ripening is undetermined, meaning that the three [types]—to be experienced in the present life, and so forth—are not determined to obtain ripening. Within this, there are three [types]: 1. that whose ripening is undetermined [though] determined for the present time; 2. that whose ripening is undetermined [though] determined for the subsequent life's time; 3. that whose ripening is undetermined [though] determined for the time of lives after next. What this master means is: "karma whose time is determined but whose ripening is undetermined" means that it is determined to three times, yet its ripening is undetermined. If it is experienced at this time, it is experienced; if it is not experienced at this time, it is never experienced at all. The second alternative is that there is karma whose ripening is determined but whose time is undetermined, meaning undetermined karma that is determined to obtain ripening. Here there is only one [type], namely, that whose ripening is determined while its time is undetermined. The third alternative is that there is karma whose time and ripening are both determined, meaning [karma] to be experienced in the present life and so forth that is determined to obtain ripening. Here there are three [types]: 1. determined in both time and ripening in the present; 2. determined in both time and ripening in the subsequent life; 3. determined in both time and ripening in lives after next. The fourth alternative is that there is karma whose time and ripening are both undetermined, meaning undetermined karma that is not determined to obtain ripening. Here there is only one [type], namely, that whose time and ripening are both undetermined. They state that, in total, there are eight kinds of karma: the four kinds—present, subsequent, after next, and undetermined—each have determined and undetermined, thus making eight kinds. The three of the first alternative are undetermined among the determined; the one of the second alternative is determined among the undetermined; the three of the third alternative are determined among the determined; the one of the fourth alternative is undetermined among the undetermined.
