"That which arises dependent on deceit ... because they belong to the same category as crooked deceit": this below is the distinct explanation. Bodily, vocal, and mental karma that arise dependent on deceit are therefore called 'crooked karma' in the sūtras. Deceit and crookedness belong to similar categories, just as eye (yan) and eye (mu) are different names [for the same thing]. Explaining crookedness by deceit, crookedness is the cause and karma is the fruit. The fruit of karma takes its name from this cause of crookedness; hence it is called 'crooked karma.' Thus the Nyāyānusāra states: "The truly crooked refers to views. Hence the sūtra says: What is truly crooked? It refers to evil views. Deceit belongs to that category, and therefore obtains the name 'crooked.' Bodily, vocal, and mental karma produced from deceit have crookedness as their cause, so the fruit receives the name of the cause; therefore the World-Honoured One called them 'crooked.'" Whence do we know that deceit instigates karma? As fascicle 112 of the Mahāvibhāṣā states in establishing and dismissing the three unwholesome roots: "The six defilement-stains can sometimes instigate coarse, bad bodily and vocal karma, lacking the other four meanings."
