"If arising dependent on greed ... because they belong to the same category as turbid greed": if bodily, vocal, and mental karma arise dependent on greed, they are therefore called 'turbid karma' in the sūtras. Greed and turbidity belong to similar categories, just as eye (yan) and eye (mu) are different names [for the same thing]. Explaining turbidity by greed: turbidity is the cause and karma is the fruit; karma takes its name from that cause of turbidity; hence it is called 'turbid karma.' Thus the Nyāyānusāra states: "Greed is called turbid because when greed manifests, it attaches with craving to the cognitive object, being of a stained nature. Production from it and so forth should be explained as before." Furthermore, the Mahāvibhāṣā states: "Question: Why is greed called turbid? Answer: Because it can stain and pollute. Just as in worldly dyeing, the color is said to be turbid." The Nyāyānusāra and fascicle 114 of the Mahāvibhāṣā provide further explanations that cannot be detailed in full.
