"That regarding what the World-Honoured One [spoke with definitive meaning] up to [acting as a condition for committing grave offenses]": The Sautrāntika answers. It means that regarding what the World-Honoured One stated with definitive meaning (nītārtha) that one who commits the four grave offenses is not called a bhikṣu, you interpret it differently through the ultimate sense, making it of non-definitive meaning (nīyārtha). If one says that committing a grave offense abandons the vows, he, fearing the loss of the vows, protects and upholds them without violation. If you say that committing a grave offense does not abandon the essence of the vows, it acts as a condition for committing grave offenses for those with abundant defilements, because upon hearing that they are not abandoned, they will repeatedly commit grave offenses. Therefore, to say that committing a grave offense does not abandon the vows is perverse and insolent.
