"First, through the undertaking mind... discarding what was previously undertaken": First, abandonment through the breaking and cessation of the undertaking mind, because this non-informative karma is obtained through the undertaking mind. That is, having previously sworn with a wholesome mind or unwholesome mind, one made this vow: "I will constantly do good or do evil at a certain time"—wholesome like paying homage and praising, unwholesome like beating and striking. The non-informative karma continues accordingly. Before the period is completed, when the original vow is about to be compromised, if one suddenly conceives regret halfway through and abandons the original vowed wholesome or unwholesome mind, thinking: "From now on, I discard what was previously undertaken", the non-informative karma is then abandoned. Originally, this non-informative karma was obtained through the undertaking mind; now, by abandoning the undertaking mind, the non-informative karma is also abandoned. If it is abandoning the undertaking mind, parting with it is called abandonment, not that one is about to not possess it. If it is abandoning non-informative karma, being about to not possess it is called abandonment. Furthermore, Nyāyānusāra, fascicle 39, says: "First, abandonment through the breaking and cessation of the undertaking mind. That is, having previously sworn: 'I will constantly pay homage to caityas, praise them, and the like at a certain time', now one thinks: 'I will no longer do it later.' That intention (āśaya) ceases from this point, because one discards the original intention. Or again, by undertaking another activity whose force is stronger and which is contrary to the previously ongoing activity, the original intention ceases and the non-informative karma is broken." According to the text of the Nyāyānusāra, undertaking actions is also included within the undertaking mind; not mentioning evil is an abbreviation, or included under the word "and the like" (等). However, it also says that when one performs another activity whose force is stronger and which is contrary to the activity previously constantly practiced, the original inferior intention ceases at that time and the non-informative karma is broken. Attaining the superior and abandoning the inferior differs from this treatise. Here, abandonment through the breaking and cessation of the undertaking mind corresponds in meaning to intentional abandonment. The Mahāvibhāṣā calls it cessation of intention; the Saṃyuktābhidharmahṛdaya calls it cessation of expectation; the names differ, but the meaning is the same.
