[On the reply,] "First, among the unwholesome [...] in order that one might keep far away from them": Here follows the answer. First, among the unwholesome, bodily bad paths of karma do not subsume preparatory actions, subsequent actions, or other unwholesome bodily actions under bodily bad conduct—namely drinking alcohol, seizing, beating, or binding others, and the like; or undertaking killing and so forth where, lacking requisite conditions, the act is not accomplished. Because preparatory actions and the like are not coarse and manifest, they are not named paths of karma. If bodily bad conduct causes another sentient being to lose their life, it becomes the path of karma of killing; if to lose their wealth, it becomes the path of karma of theft; if to lose a wife or concubine, it becomes the path of karma of sexual misconduct. Because the loss of life and the like are coarse and manifest, they are spoken of as paths of karma; [and] the World-Honoured One [taught them] in order that one might keep far away from them.
