17.53

「言將生位至應知亦爾」者，釋經兩位續善不同。若由過去宿習內因邪見力故彼斷善根，將死時續，以因強故。若由現在諸邪教等外緣力故彼斷善根，將生時續，以緣弱故。若由自思量推求力，或由他惡友為說力，應知亦爾。

"The statement 'at the point of being about to be born' [means at the transition of existence; at the point of death is likewise]": This explains the sūtra's difference between the two stages of resuming good. If one severed the roots of good through the power of internal causal wrong views habitually practiced in the past, one resumes them when about to die, because the causes are strong. If one severed the roots of good through the power of external conditions such as various false teachings in the present, one resumes them when about to take birth, because the conditions are weak. If it is through the power of one's own deliberation and investigation, or through the power of being taught by evil friends, it should be understood in the same way.
