"It refers to [...] are collectively designated by the name 'giving'": the answer. It means the collection of mind and mental factors contemporaneous with non-greed that can give rise to these bodily and vocal actions is called the motivating factors. Another explanation: The mind and mental factors contemporaneous with non-greed that can give rise to this collection of bodily and vocal actions—those that can give rise are called the motivating factors. The former explanation is superior. A verse is cited to corroborate the meaning: the wholesome five aggregates of a moment are collectively designated by the name "giving". The word "moment" (kṣaṇa) here does not mean a single instant (ekakṣaṇa), but is based on tatkṣaṇa (that period). Taking the four aggregates of mind and mental factors that motivate as originating cause, and the physical aggregate of bodily and vocal actions produced by them, the preceding and succeeding wholesome five aggregates are collectively called a moment. Another explanation: This verse is based on originating in a moment, hence it says that these wholesome five aggregates of a moment are collectively designated by the name "giving". Question: As the Vibhāṣā, fascicle 29, explains the intrinsic nature of the offering of material goods: "Critique: It should be said like this. Whether it be the renounced wealth, the bodily and vocal actions of the giver, the mind and mental factors that motivate them, or the increase of derived materiality of the faculties and great elements after the recipient receives it—all are its intrinsic nature. Thus the offering of material goods collectively takes the five aggregates as its intrinsic nature." According to the text of the Vibhāṣā, it also takes the renounced wealth as the intrinsic nature of giving. Why does this treatise not take wealth? Explanation: Because the arbiter in the Vibhāṣā broadly identifies the intrinsic nature of material giving, it comprehensively includes the renounced wealth and the faculties, and so forth. This treatise is specifically based on the true intrinsic nature of giving, and therefore says that the means of renunciation is called giving.
