18.13

「非能破者至僧眾所成」者，釋下一句。非是天授能破者成此僧破體，但是所破愚僧所成。休法師云：「天授是僧，非但能破，亦有所破之義。以此能破亦有成義。」今解：不然。今破彼得聖法輪之因，令不得聖。天授雖是僧，無得聖故，非所破也。又論但說所破僧成。

Regarding "It is not possessed by the one who causes the schism ... it is possessed by the Saṃgha assembly": this explains the last line. It is not Devadatta, the one who causes the schism, who possesses this entity of schism; it is possessed only by the foolish Saṃgha that is split. Dharma Master Xiu says: "Devadatta is a monk; not only does he cause the schism, he also has the aspect of being split. Thus the one who causes the schism also possesses it." Now it is explained: this is not so. Here one breaks their cause for attaining the noble wheel of Dharma, preventing them from attaining nobility. Although Devadatta is a monk, because he does not attain nobility, he is not one who is split. Moreover, the treatise only says that it is possessed by the Saṃgha that is split.
