"If endowed with four virtues ... because it is not for superior rebirth": this explains the lower two lines. If endowed with four virtues, it attains the name "pure"; this explains the word "pure." If not endowed with these virtues, it is called "impure." As for the four virtues: first, not being ruined by the transgression of morality—transgression of morality refers to the aforementioned unvirtuous corporeal forms; this explains "not ruined by transgression of morality." Second, not being ruined by the causes of that transgression of morality—those causes refer to greed and so forth; this explains "not ruined by its causes." Third, what does it rely on as an antidote? It means relying on the four applications of mindfulness, the four right strivings, and so forth; these applications of mindfulness and so forth can serve as antidotes to that transgression of morality and its causes; this explains "relying on antidotes." Fourth, relying on cessation: that is, relying on nirvāṇa, wishing to dedicate the merits produced by upholding morality toward nirvāṇa, because it is not for seeking the two superior rebirths of humans and devas; this explains "relying on cessation."
