"The word 'and so on' is to show ... fifth, dedication toward tranquility": the verse says "and so on" to indicate two different traditions. This is the first teacher. Some say: the purity of morality is through five kinds of causes. Thus the Saṃyuktābhidharmahṛdaya, fascicle 8, states: "Purity of the fundamental is freedom from initiating the fundamental courses of action. Purity of the retinue is freedom from preparatory activities such as taking life. Not being ruined by applied thoughts is freedom from the disturbance of the three applied thoughts of desire, malice, and harm. Embracing mindfulness is embracing mindfulness of the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha; for this reason, one is also free from all neutral minds. Directly directing toward liberation is upholding morality for the sake of liberation, not for the sake of body, wealth, or other pursuits; therefore it is also spoken of as conforming to the factors of awakening. Through these five causes and conditions, morality is pure."
