"Other masters say ... because of the defilements of actions and afflictions": this is the second master. He says that morality has four kinds. First, morality of fear, which contains four: first, fear concerning clothing and food, because of the fear of lacking a livelihood; second, fear of the world, because of the fear of bad reputation; third, fear of the assembly, because of the fear of punishment; fourth, fear of the future, because of the fear of the evil destinies—one receives and protects śīla out of these. Second, morality of hope, which contains five: first, craving for existences; second, craving for superior rank; third, craving for great wealth; fourth, craving for respect; fifth, craving for praise—one receives and maintains pure morality out of these. Third, morality conforming to the factors of awakening: because this morality can conform to the seven factors of awakening, it is called the factor-of-awakening morality; that is, one receives and maintains pure morality in order to seek liberation, nirvāṇa, and the eight noble branches such as right view, so this morality conforms to the factors of awakening. Fourth, pure morality: that is, uncontaminated morality; because it can forever be free from the defilements of actions and afflictions, it is called pure morality.
