"The treatise says: […] beyond this, there is no limit" explains the first two lines, elucidating the schism of the wheel of Dharma. It is understandable from the text. Furthermore, the Vibhāṣā says: "Question: When the Saṃgha was split, was the Buddha within the assembly or not? Answer: At that time, the Buddha resided within that boundary, but was not in the assembly. How is this known? It was heard that when Devadatta was about to split the Saṃgha, the Buddha, out of compassion, admonished and forbade him, saying: 'Devadatta! Do not split the Saṃgha; do not give rise to extremely grave, unwholesome evil; do not head toward a place of disagreeable, great fruition of suffering.' Although the Buddha admonished him earnestly like this, Devadatta had no thought of stopping. At that time, the World-Honoured One gave rise to correct knowledge and vision, thoroughly examining the past: 'Did I in past times split another's retinue?' He then saw for himself that countless, innumerable kalpas ago, he had destroyed another ṛṣi's retinue. The maturation of that karma was now manifesting before him. Having seen this, he knew that this Saṃgha would definitely be broken, so he entered a quiet room and sat silently in meditation, and Devadatta then broke the Saṃgha. Therefore it is known that the World-Honoured One was within the boundary, but was not in the assembly."
