"Splitting only the karmavācanā […] therefore it also says 'and so forth'" explains the latter two lines. 'Applies to three continents' because there are noble teachings and because there is an assembly of ordained disciples. The rest of the text is understandable. The Nyāyānusāra-śāstra says: "At what times can there be a schism in the Saṃgha, a schism in the Saṃgha of karmavācanā? From after the establishment of the boundary down to the present day, it can occur until the Dharma is extinguished; a schism in the Saṃgha of the wheel of Dharma is excluded at six times." Furthermore, the Vibhāṣā, fascicle 116, says: "Question: What is the difference between a schism of karmavācanā and a schism of the wheel of Dharma? Answer: A schism of karmavācanā means that within one boundary there are two divisions of the Saṃgha, each staying separately to perform poṣadha, karmavācanā, and recitation of the precepts. A schism of the wheel of Dharma means establishing another teacher and another path, as Devadatta said: 'I am the Great Teacher, not the śramaṇa Gautama. The five dharmas are the path, not the eightfold noble path taught by Gautama.'"
