Regarding the passage from "The verse says" up to "these are the analogues of the five heinous [sins]": the word "analogue" has the meaning of similarity. That is to say, if someone engages in extreme defilement—meaning unchaste conduct—with their mother who is an arhatī, or with their mother and an arhatī, this is called the substantial karma analogous to matricide. Because an offensive karma is committed against a mother, it is called an analogous karma. Or if someone slays a bodhisattva who has abided in certainty for a hundred great eons, this is called the substantial karma analogous to patricide. Because the bodhisattva’s kindness is profound like a father’s, committing karma against him is called an analogous karma. Or slaying a noble one in training is the substantial karma analogous to slaying an arhat, because those in training and those beyond training are equally noble fields of merit; committing karma against them is called an analogous karma. The conditions for Saṃgha concord refer to requisites and the like. If someone robs the conditions for Saṃgha concord, causing the Saṃgha to disperse, this is called the substantial karma analogous to causing a schism in the Saṃgha. Requisites for concord are equivalent in meaning to the Saṃgha; committing karma against them is called an analogous karma. Or if someone destroys a Buddha stupa, this is called the substantial karma analogous to shedding the blood of a Buddha's body. The veneration by the multitude for this stupa is similar to that for a Buddha; committing karma against it is called an analogous karma. Such are named the analogues of the five heinous [sins].
