"Thinking oneself superior toward the superior is called overweening arrogance"—this explains the third conceit. Thinking oneself superior toward the superior: "superior" means surpassing oneself, and conceiting oneself as surpassing him, it is called overweening arrogance (mānātimāna). Alternatively, "māna" means haughtiness, and being haughtier than the previous arrogance (atimāna), it is called overweening arrogance. The Nyāyānusāra says: "Toward others of superior family, intelligence, and so on, thinking oneself superior to them is called overweening arrogance."
