[On the phrase] “The Treatise says: … are also subsumed under indeterminate roots”: This explains the first two lines. The masters of this country say: There are also three kinds of indeterminate roots. The term “indeterminate” (avyākṛta) runs through both obscured and non-obscured. That is to say, obscured craving and delusion, as well as obscured and non-obscured wisdom. Among the non-obscured, down to what is born of maturation (vipākaja), it is also subsumed under the indeterminate roots. Thus the Mahāvibhāṣā (fascicle 156) says: “The Vaibhāṣika masters of Kaśmīra state: The indeterminate roots are three: indeterminate craving, wisdom, and ignorance. Indeterminate craving refers to the craving belonging to the five classes of the form and formless realms. Indeterminate wisdom refers to obscured indeterminate wisdom and non-obscured indeterminate wisdom. Obscured indeterminate wisdom refers to the view of individuality (satkāya-dṛṣṭi) and extreme view (antagrāha-dṛṣṭi) of the desire realm, and the defiled wisdom of the five classes of the form and formless realms. Non-obscured indeterminate wisdom refers to the wisdom co-arising with minds of deportment (īryāpatha), crafts (śilpasthāna), born of maturation, and transformation (nirmāṇa). Indeterminate ignorance refers to the ignorance associated with the view of individuality and extreme view in the desire realm, and the ignorance of the five classes of the form and formless realms.” Question: Among the indeterminates, why are these three separately established as roots? Solution: “Root” has the meaning of cause. Because these three serve as superior causes in generating dharmas, they are established as roots. Craving is the basis of all afflictions, delusion is universally associated with all defilements, and wisdom is capable of discernment and serves as the foremost guide for the multitude.
