"The masters of the Sautrāntika school […] should not obstinately insist upon it": The debate on seeing above has presented two different views. Now the Sautrāntika masters, viewing the merits and faults from the side, refute both schools. Certain Sautrāntika masters say: An active function of seeing does not exist in the first place, so how can one arbitrarily cling to it? Saying that the eye sees or saying that consciousness sees is like mutually gathering to clutch at empty space. Conditions such as the eye and form give rise to visual consciousness; among these, which is the agent and which is the object of seeing? When phenomena arise, prior causes and subsequent effects induce one another to emerge, and in reality there is no active function. Within the path of continuous succession and at the stage where conditions are assembled, it is conceptualized through pervasive discrimination (parikalpa) that there is an active function capable of seeing, hearing, and so forth. If one says that an active function truly exists, this would be identical to the category of action (karman) in the Vaiśeṣika system. Question: Is there no active function in the Sautrāntika school? Explanation: Phenomena have only efficacy (sāmarthya); in reality they have no active function (vyāpāra). The World-Honoured One merely spoke metaphorically of 'seeing' to accord with worldly sentiments. These are all subsumed under conventional truth (saṃvṛti-satya) and should not be clung to. As the World-Honoured One said: "One should not stubbornly cling to the regional dialects and various different expressions. Worldly designations and notions are established according to convention; one should not obstinately insist upon them." Only the causes and effects of phenomena are subsumed under the ultimate truth (paramārtha-satya).
