Language

20.126

Regarding "Because they are capable of serving as support and grasping, they are called graspings (upādāna)": grasping is called upādāna. The defilements of the four graspings can serve as that upon which sentient beings rely, grasping onto phenomena; therefore they are called graspings. Another explanation: the defilements of the four graspings can serve as the support for all sāsrava dharmas, grasping onto all sāsrava dharmas. Another explanation: the defilements of the four graspings can serve as the support for karma, grasping future fruition.
