Regarding "Venerable Ghoṣaka ... is not called free from passion": this is the second master. Because his voice was wondrous, he is called Ghoṣaka. In Sanskrit *Ghoṣa*; the old translation *qusha* was erroneous. He says: Due to a distinct class of temporal characteristics (lakṣaṇa) among the non-concomitant factors, there is distinction among the three periods of time. Each conditioned dharma has three [characteristics]. In whichever period it resides, one is manifested and two are latent. The one that is currently manifested is called 'directly joined with', while the other two, though latent, are not non-existent in substance, and therefore are also said to be 'not apart from that characteristic'. Another explanation: when the characteristic has an operation, it is called 'joined with'; although the characteristics have no operation [when latent], they accompany the dharma and their substance is not non-existent, hence he says 'and is not called apart from'. Just as when a man is currently impassioned with one wife, that single greed has an operation, while toward the other concubines, although greed exists, it has no operation, yet he is not called free from greed, because it constantly accompanies him.
