Regarding "Venerable Vasumitra ... placed in the thousands position is called a thousand": this is the explanation of the third master. *Vasu* is the name of a deity; being a companion to the deity, he is called Vasumitra. His parents loved their child, and fearing harm inflicted by evil spirits, they said the deity was his companion so that they would not dare to harm him, hence he was named thus. In Sanskrit *Vasumitra*: *Vasu* means the deity, and *mitra* means friend. The old translation *hosumi* was erroneous. He says: Due to difference in state (avasthā), there is distinction among the three periods of time. He maintains that when dharmas traverse the periods of time, when they reach the states of the three periods, distinct designations of the three periods are made in each state. Due to the distinction among the three states, it is not that the three substances are distinct. Just as moving a single counting token, placing it in the units position it is called one, placing it in the hundreds position it is called a hundred, placing it in the thousands position it is called a thousand; although passing through different positions it is distinct, the substance of the counting token is not different.
