On the passage from "If toward this entity" to "because they definitely arise universally": explaining the first three lines. If toward this entity there is greed, anger, or conceit that has already arisen in the past and is not abandoned, or has already arisen in the present, it can bind this entity. Because greed, anger, and conceit are defilements of specific characteristics, arising by taking distinct entities as objects, sentient beings do not definitely give rise to them universally across all entities of the three times. Since being manifest in the present necessarily precludes the meaning of abandonment, "not abandoned" is not stated for the present, while the words "not abandoned" are designated for the past.
