Regarding "Just as explained above [...] what is their essence?": below is the third major section, miscellaneous explanations of the defilements. Within this: first, explaining the four categories of outflows (āsrava) and so forth; second, explaining the six categories of fetters (saṃyojana) and so forth; third, explaining the distinctions among the five hindrances (nīvaraṇa). In explaining the four categories of outflows and so forth: first, identifying the essence; second, explaining the names. Below this identifies the essence. The ten kinds of anuśayas spoken of above, together with the ten entanglements below, are spoken of in the sūtras under four categories of defilements: outflows (āsrava), floods (ogha), yokes (yoga), and graspings (upādāna). What is the essence of such outflows and so forth? The general names of the four kinds are explained separately below. In explaining their specific names: among the three outflows, the first two are determinative compounds (tatpuruṣa), and the last one is an appositional compound (karmadhāraya). Among the four floods, the first two are tatpuruṣa compounds, and the last two are karmadhāraya compounds. The four yokes should be understood to be like the four floods. Among the four graspings, the first and the last two are tatpuruṣa compounds, and the second is a karmadhāraya compound. As for the expression "grasping of doctrines of self" (ātmavādopādāna): because internal dharmas of sentient beings can be spoken of with the word "self"; earlier the text states that words of self refer to the internal body, in reliance upon which one speaks of a "self." The desire and so forth of the higher realms mostly takes the internal body as object and takes words of self as object; hence it is called "grasping of doctrines of self."
