Regarding 'The latent dispositions having already been explained... included in the defilements of affliction', this is the fourth [section], explaining the secondary afflictions. Briefly explaining the verse: 'aggregates' excludes the unconditioned. 'Formations' excludes the four aggregates of form and so on. 'Mental factors' excludes non-associated formations within the aggregate of formations. 'Defiled' excludes the wholesome and indeterminate among mental factors. 'Other than these' excludes the root afflictions among defilements, meaning other than these root afflictions. 'Secondary affliction' indicates the name. About to explain the secondary afflictions, the root afflictions are first explained. These root afflictions are also named secondary afflictions, because they all torment and disturb following the mind. Furthermore, there are others besides these root afflictions, distinct from the root afflictions, subsumed under the aggregate of defiled mental factors, which are also named secondary afflictions because they arise in conformity with afflictions. They are not called afflictions because they are not root ones. The characteristics of those secondary afflictions are listed extensively as explained in fascicle nine, 'Chapter on Miscellaneous Matters', of the Dharmaskandha-śāstra. Furthermore, one should briefly discuss those subsumed under the ten entanglements and those subsumed under the six defilements of affliction.
