On the phrase “Among these six kinds… are given the name of secondary defilement”: This explains the latter four lines. The word “outgrowth” refers to the immediate outgrowth result of that fundamental defilement. Pretension is the outgrowth of the five views. As if asked: ‘What dharma is crooked?’, the answer is: ‘The bad views.’ Bad views are called crooked and resemble pretension; thus pretension is definitely the outgrowth of views. Therefore, the first fascicle of the Abhidharmāvatāra states: “Deceit and pride are outgrowths of greed, because they are of the same kind as greed. Harm and resentment are outgrowths of hostility, because they are of the same kind as hostility. The stain of spite is an outgrowth of the attachment to views (dṛṣṭiparāmarśa), because one who grasps their own views as supreme annoys self and others. The stain of pretension is an outgrowth of the views, because those in whom views proliferate have much crooked pretension; as it is said, crooked pretension refers to bad views.”
