"Thus by speaking of nutriment ... the two are combined into one": this is the summary conclusion. Furthermore, the Nyāyānusāra states: "For what reason are the hindrances of sensual lust, ill will, and doubt each established separately as a hindrance upon a single entity, whereas the two hindrances of styāna-drowsiness and auddhatya-remorse are each established by combining two entities? The nutriments and antidotes of sensual lust, ill will, and doubt are distinct; therefore, each is established separately as a hindrance. Because styāna with drowsiness, and auddhatya with remorse, have the same nutriment, antidote, and practical function, although their entities are distinct, they are jointly combined and established as one. The nutriment of the hindrance of sensual lust refers to the aspect of attractiveness; the antidote to this hindrance refers to the aspect of impurity. The nutriment of the hindrance of ill will refers to the aspect of repulsiveness; the antidote to this hindrance refers to the wholesome root of benevolence. The nutriment of the hindrance of doubt refers to the three times, as the sūtra says: 'regarding the past, one gives rise to such doubt,' and so on in detail. The antidote to this hindrance refers to when one is able to observe conditions and dependent origination as they really are." The Nyāyānusāra's explanation of the nutriment, non-nutriment, and function of styāna-drowsiness and auddhatya-remorse is the same as this treatise. It also states: "Or, greed, ill will, and doubt are complete defilements, and each can individually sustain the function of being a covering hindrance. Styāna-drowsiness and auddhatya-remorse are not complete defilements; only when the two are combined can they sustain the function of being a covering hindrance."
