21.83

「三由斷彼至彼隨斷故」者，三由斷彼所緣故斷。謂見滅、道斷有漏緣惑，以無漏緣惑能為彼有漏緣惑境，所緣無漏緣惑若斷時，能緣有漏惑亦隨斷故。如羸病者非杖不行，杖若折時彼隨亦倒故。

"Third, through abandonment of their cognitive objects... because they are abandoned in consequence": Third, abandonment through abandonment of their cognitive objects. That is to say, the afflictions conditioned by the contaminated [and abandoned by] seeing cessation and the path: because the afflictions conditioning the uncontaminated can serve as the objects of those afflictions conditioning the contaminated, when the cognitive objects—the afflictions conditioning the uncontaminated—are abandoned, the afflictions with contaminated objects that cognize them are also abandoned in consequence. Just as a frail and ill person cannot walk without a staff: when the staff breaks, he also falls down along with it.
