「為欲對治至說四聖種」者，答。為欲對治四種愛生。經言：苾芻！愛因衣服，應生時生，初獲時也。應住時住，次受用時也。應執時執，後堅執時也。如是有愛，或因飲食，或因臥具，或因有、無有，皆如是說。有，謂有愛。無有，謂無有愛。為欲對治此四愛故，說四聖種。

"In order to counteract... the four lineages of the noble are spoken of": answers. In order to counteract the four kinds of the arising of craving. The sūtra states: 'Bhikṣus! Craving, conditioned by robes, arises when it should arise'—that is, when first acquired. 'It abides when it should abide'—that is, when next used. 'It attaches when it should attach'—that is, when finally clung to firmly. In this way, craving for existence, whether conditioned by food and drink, or conditioned by bedding and seating, or conditioned by existence and non-existence, is stated in all these cases. 'Existence' refers to craving for existence; 'non-existence' refers to craving for non-existence. In order to counteract these four cravings, the four lineages of the noble are spoken of.
