The words 'The treatise says ... has non-greed as its nature' explain having non-greed as its nature. Furthermore, the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle forty, says: 'Question: What is the intrinsic nature of the contemplation of impurity? Answer: It has the wholesome root of non-greed as its intrinsic nature. Meditators say that wisdom is its intrinsic nature, as the sūtra says: "Having seen forms with the eye, one subsequently contemplates impurity," and contemplation is wisdom. Other masters say: It has revulsion as its intrinsic nature, because it is disgusted with its object. Evaluation: This contemplation of impurity has the wholesome root of non-greed as its intrinsic nature, not wisdom and not revulsion. Why is that? Because it is the remedy for craving. If combined with its retinue, the four skandhas or five skandhas are its intrinsic nature.'
