Regarding the passage [beginning with] "After this, he [...] thus it is explained": Below, this specifically explains the seven births. After attaining the noble fruit in this present body, subsequently in the human realm at most he experiences seven intermediate existences and seven rebirth existences, and likewise in the divine realm; the four sets of seven make twenty-eight births in total. One ought to say twenty-eight, but because each is equally seven, it is said that there are at most seven births. Just as with the seven bases of skillfulness, where each of the five aggregates has seven, and the five sets of seven ought to be called thirty-five, yet one says "the seven bases of skillfulness" because they are identical in being seven, so one merely says seven. The seven bases of skillfulness are as explained previously. It is also like the saptaparṇa tree: in the Western Regions there is a tree where every branch has seven leaves; in reality the leaves are countless, but it is called a seven-leaved tree because they are identical in being seven. Such is the explanation of the Vaibhāṣikas. "Experience" (jie) means linking and continuing without interruption. Alternatively, "knot" (jie) means the defilements, by which one undergoes seven [births].
