[On the text,] "Thus, trainees [...] are not subsumed under the preceding fruit": This concludes the section. Thus, trainees and non-trainees, through the four paths and four fruits, total eight noble persons (āryapudgala). Although there are eight designations, in actual reality there are only five: namely, those abiding in the four fruits and the candidate for the first fruit, because the candidates for the latter three fruits do not depart from the preceding three fruits, as they proceed toward subsequent candidateships while still holding the preceding fruits. Since the first candidate has no preceding fruit under which to be subsumed, it is separately established as one. This is stated according to one who attains the fruits gradually. If one has detached doubly from the defilements of the first six grades, or detached completely from the nine grades of defilement, then while abiding in the path of seeing, one is called a candidate for the fruit of once-returner or non-returner; these are additionally named as two real entities and are not subsumed under the preceding fruit of stream-enterer or once-returner. Alternatively, they are not subsumed under the preceding fruit because there was no preceding fruit before them.
