[On the text,] "The Treatise says [...] because both are capable of detaching": Only an anāsrava path detaches from the defilements of the Peak of Existence (bhavāgra), because the power of the anāsrava is superior and it can counteract both its own and higher stages, whereas a sāsrava path cannot. Why is this? A conventional path is generated only in the immediately higher threshold stage to counteract the defilements of a lower stage; above this Peak of Existence there is no further conventional threshold path, so a higher one cannot sever the lower. Although there is a sāsrava path of counteraction of its own stage, its own stage cannot counteract its own stage. Why is this? The path of counteraction of its own stage is increased in accordance by the defilements of its own stage, just as a bound person cannot untie himself. Furthermore, the Nyāyānusāra states: "If those defilements increase in accordance with this path, this path certainly cannot counteract those defilements. If the power of this path can counteract them, then those defilements certainly do not increase in accordance with this path. Therefore, the path of its own stage does not counteract its own stage." Although the path of a lower stage is not increased in accordance by the defilements of a higher stage, because its power is inferior, a lower one does not sever a higher one. The explanation of the next line is understandable from the text.
