[On the text,] "All those based on threshold concentrations [...] necessarily enter the fundamental": This is the fourth: the distinction of paths subsumed under the threshold concentrations. The threshold concentrations can only detach from the lower eight stages. In this text, it should say: those detached from are eight, namely excluding the state of neither perception nor non-perception. As for saying "nine," this is a general reference. Another explanation: if the threshold concentration of the first dhyāna is anāsrava, it can also detach universally from the defilements of the stage of the Peak of Existence; hence it says "nine." Speaking in truth, the threshold concentration of the first dhyāna can also detach from the higher; the statement in the preceding line that the threshold concentration detaches from the lower is said according to the majority. The fundamental states of the first and second dhyānas have the feeling of joy (prīti), while the fundamental state of the third dhyāna has the feeling of pleasure (sukha); since the threshold concentrations all have equanimity, it says that the feelings are different. The threshold and fundamental concentrations of the upper five are all feelings of equanimity (upekṣā). The remaining text is understandable.
