[On the text,] "By the path of which stage [...] because they have already been detached": This is the third: the scope and restriction of the path's detachment across stages. All anāsrava paths are generally based on nine stages, namely: the four dhyānas, the unarrived (anāgamya), the intermediate (dhyānāntara), and the three formless realms. If subsumed under the unarrived, it can detach from nine stages; if subsumed under the other eight stages, as appropriate, each can detach from the defilements of its own and higher stages. The intermediate of the first dhyāna can detach from its own stage and the seven stages above it, up to the sphere of nothingness, which can detach from its own stage and the Peak of Existence above it; they cannot detach from lower ones, because when a higher path manifests, the lower has already been detached from. All sāsrava paths can only detach from the immediately lower stage, not its own stage, not a higher stage, and not a still lower stage. For example, when a conventional path is generated based on the threshold concentration of the second dhyāna, it can only detach from the defilements of the immediately lower first dhyāna, because it is increased in accordance by the defilements of its own stage. It cannot detach from its own stage, cannot detach from the higher because its power is inferior, and cannot detach from the lower because the desire realm has already been detached from.
