"The treatise states [...] that is, abandoning the five lower fetters" explains the first two lines. When one abandons six grades of defilements through the worldly path to attain the fruit of the once-returner, or abandons nine grades of defilements to attain the fruit of the non-returner, this fruit does not take only the analytical cessations attained by the worldly path as its nature of abandonment-fruit; rather, the analytical cessations attained by the path of seeing are also intermingled within it to form a single fruit altogether, since one uniformly gives rise to a single class of exalted acquisition of the path of the fruit that acquires all of those attained analytical cessations. Hence the sūtra says: What is the fruit of the once-returner? It means the abandonment of the three fetters of the path of seeing, and the abandonment of the six grades abandoned by cultivation, which is named the attenuation of greed, anger, and delusion. What is the fruit of the non-returner? It means the abandonment of the five lower fetters. Among the five fetters, three are abandoned by seeing and two are abandoned by cultivation. The intention of quoting the sūtra is to prove that the two fruits are intermingled; therefore, because the analytical cessations attained by the worldly path are intermingled with those attained by the unpolluted path, the name 'fruit of asceticism' is assigned from the majority. Thus Mahāvibhāṣā 66 says: "It should be stated thus: the name is established from the majority, because the majority are fruits attained by the noble path. That is, when the two fruits are attained through the worldly path, all abandonments of what is to be abandoned by seeing across the three realms are attained through the power of the noble path, and are therefore called fruits of asceticism. Although there are abandonments of the six grades and nine grades of what is to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire realm that are not attained by the noble path, nevertheless from the majority they also obtain the establishment of the name 'fruit of asceticism,' because they are all collectively acquired by a single unpolluted acquisition."
