"This is the noble truth of suffering [...] what is spoken is as such" is the answer. 'This is the noble truth of suffering' is spoken for the path of seeing; 'this should be fully known' is spoken for the path of cultivation; 'this has been fully known' is spoken for the path of the adept (aśaikṣa-mārga)—these are called the three turnings. Precisely at each of these individual turnings, vision, knowledge, wisdom, and awakening separately arise; these are spoken of as the twelve aspects. In the three states, contemplating the truth of suffering each has four aspects; three times four makes twelve aspects. Regarding the terms 'vision, knowledge, wisdom, and awakening,' Mahāvibhāṣā 79 says: "'Vision' means the receptivities of Dharma-knowledge; 'knowledge' means the various Dharma-knowledges; 'wisdom' means the various subsequent receptivities; 'awakening' means the various subsequent knowledges. Furthermore, vision has the meaning of seeing; knowledge has the meaning of determination; wisdom has the meaning of illuminating; awakening has the meaning of investigating (Explanation: the former explanation refers to the path of seeing, while the latter explanation applies to all three paths). Such three turnings and twelve aspects exist for each truth; one should say twelve turnings and forty-eight aspects, but because the number is equal for each truth, one merely speaks of three turnings and twelve aspects. Just as when speaking of 'two dharmas,' two refers to eye and form, up to mind and phenomena, which should be called twelve, yet one says 'two' because the number is equal; just as with the seven bases of skillfulness, where there are seven for each of the five aggregates, which should be called thirty-five, yet one says 'seven' because the number is equal; one should know that the three turnings and twelve aspects are also like this. By virtue of these three turnings in their proper sequence, the first turning reveals the path of seeing, the second turning reveals the path of cultivation, and the third turning reveals the path of the adept. What is spoken by the Vaibhāṣikas is as such.
