"The treatise says... the meaning is as explained before": the following explains the upper two lines. That is, a once-returner advances to abandon the remaining defilements; if three conditions are complete, he is designated as an ekavīcika; if any is missing, he is not called an ekavīcika. First, by abandoning defilements: because he has abandoned seven or eight categories of the desire realm to be abandoned through cultivation. Second, by possessing faculties: because he has obtained the uncontaminated faculties of the uninterrupted [path] and [path of] liberation that counteract those [defilements]. Third, by receiving rebirth: because he further receives one remaining rebirth in the existence of the desire realm, in heaven or among humans. The verse only speaks of the first and last two conditions, not speaking of possessing faculties; its meaning is standardized as explained before in [the section on] kulaṃkula.
