Regarding 'If one abandons the ninth... because they are collectively abandoned': this explains the fourth line. If one abandons the ninth [grade], one accomplishes the non-returner fruit (anāgāmin); because one must never again return to be born in the desire realm, it is called the non-returner fruit. This non-returner fruit is alternatively called the 'abandonment of the five lower fetters' (pañca-avarabhāgīya-saṃyojana-prahāṇa). If one is a leap-over person (atidrute), one first abandons the two fetters of desire and hostility, and later abandons the three fetters of personality view, attachment to rules and rituals, and doubt. If one is a progressive person (anupūrve), one first abandons the three fetters of personality view, attachment to rules and rituals, and doubt, and later abandons the two fetters of desire and hostility. Although one must have previously abandoned either the two or the three, nevertheless, at this time they are collectively and totally abandoned; hence it is called the 'abandonment of the five lower fetters.'
