Regarding 'That called "one who enters parinirvāṇa upon birth"... means with remainder': 'one who enters parinirvāṇa upon birth' means that one dies in the desire realm and goes toward the form realm, and not long after being born is able to generate the noble path, abandon the remaining defilements, become an arhat, and directly enter parinirvāṇa. Because one possesses both the path of diligent cultivation and the path of swift progress, not long after birth one directly enters parinirvāṇa. 'Having been born' distinguishes this from the intermediate parinirvāṇa. Possessing the two paths distinguishes this from the active and effortless types. What is spoken of here as 'entering parinirvāṇa' in 'one who enters parinirvāṇa upon birth' means with remainder; only later, when the lifespan is exhausted, does one enter [nirvāṇa] without remainder. Therefore, 'one who enters parinirvāṇa upon birth' is explained in terms of [nirvāṇa] with remainder, and not based on [nirvāṇa] without remainder. The reason why nirvāṇa was not specifically explained in the preceding section on intermediate parinirvāṇa is that its characteristic was not conspicuous. The active type and the others below can be understood by analogy with the birth type, so they are not explained either.
