Regarding "Because they are of the same class as the path [...] because it has no remainder": this is the answer. Liberation and excellence are of the same class as the preparatory and uninterrupted [paths], and are therefore called paths. Another interpretation: liberation and excellence gradually turn toward higher and superior [stages] later on, serving as paths toward what follows, and are therefore called paths. Another interpretation: the path of liberation is of the same class as the preparatory and uninterrupted paths, and is therefore called a path. As for the path of excellence, because it advances to higher stages, it is called a path; or, through the power of each preceding liberation and excellence, one is able, as appropriate, to reach each subsequent stage of the path, and therefore they are called paths. Alternatively, because both of these are able to lead into [nirvāṇa] without remainder, they are also called paths.
