Regarding [the phrase] “When an ordinary person becomes free from attachment, [he cultivates] only conventional [knowledge],” the text below explains the second line and the following two lines. These latter two lines apply to both preceding contexts: when an ordinary person becomes free from attachment, he presently cultivates conventional [knowledge]. Question: Why is it that in the special progress of freedom from attachment to desire an ārya may produce [the knowledge of] others' minds, whereas for an ordinary person's special progress present cultivation is not mentioned? Solution: In the state of special progress when becoming free from attachment to desire, an ārya only produces the uncontaminated knowledge of others' minds, because taking the four aspects [of the truth of suffering] resembles the path of abandonment. Moreover, conforming to the path of abandonment, it is efficacious with respect to the path. For an ordinary person, [the knowledge of] others' minds is exclusively contaminated, differing from the six aspects of the path capable of abandonment; because principle and phenomenon are distinct and they do not conform to each other, it cannot be presently cultivated. Alternatively, in the state of an ordinary person's special progress when becoming free from attachment, [the knowledge of] others' minds may indeed arise; that this text merely states conventional knowledge is said based on the majority [of cases], namely the preliminary, uninterrupted, and liberation paths. Alternatively, it is something that should also have been stated but was not, being omitted for brevity. If one abandons the ninth [grade of defilement of] the desire realm and the ninth [grade of defilement of] the preceding three dhyānas of the form realm, one attains the fundamental [knowledge of] others' minds of the upper stage. Since the prior eight [grades] have not yet attained it and, furthermore, one does not cultivate lower stages, it is not separately designated. Also, when one produces the special progress of freedom from attachment or the preliminary path of freedom from attachment based on the fundamental four dhyāna concentrations, in all such cases one cultivates in the future two knowledges—namely, adding [the knowledge of] others' minds to the aforementioned conventional [knowledge]. Except for what has been stated before, for all remaining preliminary, uninterrupted, liberation, and special progress paths, one cultivates exclusively conventional knowledge in the future.
