Regarding 'Only the initial knowledge of exhaustion ... the ninth path of liberation': this explains the fifth, sixth, and seventh lines. This reveals cultivation of contaminated dharmas by a special object-condition. Only when the initial knowledge of exhaustion occurs in the present, relying on whatever stage, does it have the power to cultivate everywhere the immeasurable virtues of the nine stages—such as the contemplation of impurity, and so forth, which are subsumed under the mental level and produced through hearing, reflection, and cultivation. Why is this? Because the manifold afflictions of the three realms and nine stages that can bind have been severed without remainder, and the bound wholesome dharmas flow freely without obstruction. Just as when a binding cord is severed, the respiration of the bound person flows smoothly. Furthermore, one's own mind, having slain the enemies that are afflictions, now ascends the royal throne, and all wholesome dharmas arise and are acquired, coming to pay court. For instance, on the day a great king ascends the throne, by the custom of the Western Regions water is sprinkled on his crown. Therefore the sūtras speak of a 'consecrated great king', to whom all domains come to offer tribute of various precious rarities according to what their regions prize. However, if one is born in a higher stage, one definitely does not cultivate lower stages; for example, if one attains arhatship having been born in the first dhyāna, one does not cultivate the contaminated wholesome dharmas of the desire realm, up to being born in the peak of existence and attaining arhatship, where one does not cultivate the contaminated wholesome dharmas of the lower eight stages. Because someone whose body is born in a higher stage definitively does not possess lower contaminated wholesome dharmas, therefore, having been born in a higher stage, one cannot cultivate lower ones. The expression 'initial knowledge of exhaustion' designates the ninth path of liberation detaching from the peak of existence, as well as the ninth path of liberation when the previous five lineages transform their faculties; since all of these abandon the previous path and newly obtain the fruit, they are both capable of comprehensively cultivating the contaminated [dharmas] of the nine stages. Question: Beside the three category knowledges there are also special object-conditions that can cultivate the contaminated conventional knowledge of one's own and lower stages; why does it speak here only of the knowledge of exhaustion? Answer: As the Nyāyānusāra states: 'In the position of the path of seeing, beside the three category knowledges, although one can also cultivate conventional knowledge of one's own and lower stages, because this has already been stated previously, it is not discussed again here.'
