Regarding "The inferior mind ... obtain the names inferior and great": this is the sixth pair, inferior mind (alpa-citta) and great mind (mahac-citta). The inferior mind refers to the defiled mind, because it is habitually practiced by people of few pure factors. The great mind refers to the wholesome mind, because it is habitually practiced by people of many pure factors. Therefore defilement is called inferior, and wholesome is called great. Or, they are called inferior and great due to fewer or more roots of three kinds, or fewer or more valuations, or fewer or more retinues, or fewer or more following factors (anuparivartin), or lesser or greater power and function. The defiled mind has fewer roots: if it arises together with isolated ignorance, it is associated with only one root; if it arises together with attachment or aversion, it is associated with two roots, because when attachment or aversion arises, there is necessarily associated ignorance; hence it is said that at most it is associated with two. In true reality, present defilement is also not called cultivation, whereas present wholesome dharmas are called cultivation. Provisionally looking toward the future to explain retinue: the defiled mind has fewer following factors, being accompanied only by the three skandhas of feeling, perception, and formations. The wholesome mind has many following factors: although the distracted mind is accompanied by the three skandhas of feeling, perception, and formations, if it is in a concentrated mind, it is accompanied by all four skandhas of form, feeling, perception, and formations.
