On "Among the three demonstrations ... is the most supreme, not the others": this explains the lower three lines, assessing their relative superiority. Among the three demonstrations, admonition is the most venerated, because it alone is definitively accomplished through supernormal power, and definitively brings about the fruit of benefit for others in human and heavenly realms as well as the acquisition of the fruit of peaceful happiness in nirvāṇa. Because it is definitive, it is called the most venerated. The preceding two demonstrations, psychic power and thought-reading, can also be performed by spells (vidyā) and do not rely solely on supernormal power; thus they are not definitive. For example, there is a spell named Gāndhārī; one who holds this can soar freely in the sky, like the supernormal power of psychic transformation. Gāndhāra is the name of a country, and what originated from this country is named Gāndhārī. Paramārtha also says: "There is a goddess named Gāndhārī, translated as Earth-Holder. This spell was spoken by Gāndhārī, taking its name from the goddess who could speak it, and is therefore called Gāndhārī." There is also a spell named Īkṣaṇī; one who holds this can know the thoughts of others, like the supernormal power of knowing another's mind. Īkṣaṇī is translated here as 'observation'. Paramārtha also says: "Īkṣaṇī is the name of a treatise composed by a naked non-Buddhist teacher, translated as 'observation'. This spell takes its name from the treatise composed by him, and is therefore called Īkṣaṇī." The demonstration of admonition, aside from the supernormal power of the destruction of contaminants, definitely cannot be performed by other spells or methods, and is therefore definitive. Furthermore, the preceding two demonstrations of psychic power and thought-reading may merely cause others to turn their minds temporarily, without bringing about the superior fruit. The demonstration of admonition not only causes others to turn their minds toward the right, but also definitively causes them to bring about the fruit of benefit in future human and heavenly realms, as well as the fruit of peaceful happiness in nirvāṇa. Because it can be spoken in accordance with truth and expedient means, admonition is therefore the most venerated and supreme among the three demonstrations, not the other two demonstrations of psychic power and thought-reading. Regarding "admonition" (教誡), "教" means instruction, and "誡" means exhortation and warning.
