"If a single master of apparitions ... there may also be differences": this explains the seventh and eighth lines. The absorptions of other persons of the two vehicles and ordinary beings are not sovereign, and thus they cannot make one speak and another remain silent; necessarily, all their utterances must be identical. The Buddha's absorption is sovereign: sometimes they are all identical, and at other times he can make one speak and another remain silent. According to the text of the *Mahāvibhāṣā*, even for the various Buddhas, the minds capable of emitting speech in the master of apparitions and in the apparitions are distinct before and after; in the rapid [succession] between them, the speech is thought to be simultaneous. In reality, they are before and after; the statement that it is emitted by one mind means one continuous mental stream (saṃtatāna).
