"If born in the remaining destinies, it should be understood as appropriate" refers in general to the remaining destinies. If born among the devas, ghosts, or animals, one should understand the scope of their distribution as appropriate. Question: What is the distribution of the six categories relative to the five destinies? The explanation states: What is obtained through cultivation is only among humans and devas, because they are able to enter meditative absorption. What is obtained by birth, excluding humans, extends to the other four destinies. The three—mantras, medicines, and divination—belong only to the human destiny; since they do not have what is obtained by birth, these three are only among humans. Alternatively, mantras and medicines also extend to humans, devas, ghosts, and animals. Karma extends to all five destinies, because the intermediate existence is karma, which extends to all five destinies. Another explanation states: Devas have cultivation, birth, mantras, medicines, and karma, but lack divination; or alternatively, they also lack mantras and medicines. Humans, excluding what is obtained by birth, have the remaining five types. Ghosts and animals have birth, mantras, medicines, and karma, but lack cultivation and divination; or alternatively, they also lack mantras and medicines. Hell has birth and karma, but lacks cultivation, mantras, medicines, and divination. Although two explanations are given, one should still consult the text further. The Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 101, states: The human destiny has divination and has knowledge born of innate-nature mindfulness, but lacks what is obtained by birth. It also says: Devas, ghosts, animals, and hell have [the knowledge of] other minds and past abodes obtained by birth. The others are not separately explained. This passage does not contradict the two preceding explanations.
