"Increasing tenfold each... to become a Nārāyaṇa" is the answer. Because it increases tenfold successively from ordinary elephants and so forth, it is said that each subsequent power is ten times greater than the preceding one. First is an ordinary elephant, meaning an ordinary working elephant in the Western regions. Second is a fragrant elephant (gandhahastin); in the Western regions there is a distinct class of fine elephants called fragrant elephants, designated for use in battle. Third is Mahānagna (this is the name of a deity, translated here as 'Great Naked One'). Fourth is Praskandhī (also the name of a deity; 'pra' translates here as 'superior', and 'skandhī' translates as 'aggregate'). Fifth is Vāraṅga (also the name of a deity, translated here as 'Sublime Limbs'). Sixth is Cāṇūra (also the name of a deity, translated here as 'Grasper'). Seventh is Nārāyaṇa (as explained previously). The variant explanation is understandable.
