Regarding the passage from "The Prajñaptiśāstra" up to "the order of the four": this cites the Prajñaptiśāstra to explain the terms for these four. Non-regressive knowledge that takes names, phrases, and phonemes as its object is established as Dharma-pratisaṃvid. Non-regressive knowledge that takes the meanings expressed by these names and the like as its object is established as Artha-pratisaṃvid. Non-regressive knowledge that takes the distinct singular, dual, plural, masculine gender, feminine gender, neuter gender, and other expressions of these very meanings as its object is established as Nirukti-pratisaṃvid. Non-regressive knowledge that takes unhindered discourse regarding these expressions and the two paths of samādhi and prajñā on which discourse relies as its object—since only with this path can one speak—is established as Pratibhāna-pratisaṃvid. First, the expressing factor arises; next, one grasps the meaning; having grasped the meaning, only then is there unhindered speech. From this preceding and following order, the sequence of the four is made clear.
