Regarding the passage from "In truth, for all of them" up to "serves as preparatory cultivation": the author of the treatise sets forth the orthodox view. In truth, for the arising of all analytical knowledges, solely studying the Buddha's word can serve as preparatory cultivation, because within the Buddha's word the four—Dharma, Artha, Nirukti, and Pratibhāna—are fully expounded. Therefore, the evaluative master in the Mahāvibhāṣā, fascicle 180, states: "As for the correct view: all four analytical knowledges take practicing the Buddha's word as their preparatory cultivation. Just as, regarding a single verse (gāthā), one ought to speak its name like this: practicing the speech of names like this is the preparatory cultivation for Dharma-pratisaṃvid. One ought to understand its meaning like this: practicing understanding the meaning like this is the preparatory cultivation for Artha-pratisaṃvid. One ought to explain its expression like this: practicing explaining expressions like this is the preparatory cultivation for Nirukti-pratisaṃvid. One ought to speak without hindrance like this: practicing speaking without hindrance like this is the preparatory cultivation for Pratibhāna-pratisaṃvid. Therefore, all four analytical knowledges take practicing the Buddha's word as their preparatory cultivation."
